Zoe's Wake-Up Mix 2020

December 21, 2020 - Volume 3, Issue 28

The residents of this house are all night owls. All of us. With that said, the task of waking up my daughter, Zoe (aka Danger Diva), has fallen to me. I figured music should do the job. I also figured it should be music I would enjoy as well.

(Actually, it's a case of where I'm trying to expose my progeny to a variety of music, because she ends up listening to some really mediocre user-created stuff on YouTube. The plethora of songs dedicated to "Bendy & the Ink Machine" alone is fascinating and rather meh).

I posted this weekly on social media, but I have compiled the full year of tunes here, with links to these hits so you can enjoy them as well. I'll even throw in the weekly blurbs that accompanied them. Enjoy!

Week of February 3, 2020

To get my 11 year old up for school, my morning DJ skills gotta be on point.

"Juice" - Lizzo :
"Nice to Meet You" - Niall Horan :
"Spiderwebs" - No Doubt :
"Waste It On Me" - Steve Aoki featuring BTS :

Week of February 10, 2020

Changing things up on the second week of the Wake Up Mix. Trying to keep things fresh.

"We Run This" - Missy Elliott :
"Na Na Na" - My Chemical Romance :
"Nothing Breaks Like a Heart" - Mark Ronson featuring Miley Cyrus :

An eclectic mix this week.

"California Soul" - Marlena Shaw :
"Never Been in Love Before" - Cobra Starship featuring Icona Pop :
"7 Rings" - Ariana Grande :
"Taos" - The Rippingtons :

Week of March 2, 2020

If Zoe had her way, she'd get fan created songs about Bendy and the Ink Machine. But I'm trying to expose her to different things. (see I mentioned that above. There are also songs for Cuphead).

"Foux du Fafa" - Flight of the Conchords :
"Around the Bend" - The Asteroids Galaxy Tour :
"Little Black Submarines" - The Black Keys :
"My Type" - Saint Motel :

Week of March 9, 2020

The kid wanted variety. Variety was given.

"Don't Leave Me This Way" - Thelma Houston :
"A Taste of Honey" - Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass :
"West Coast" - Lana Del Rey :
"Tick Tick Boom" - The Hives :

At this point, The Rona forced school closures, so the Mix went on hiatus. The kid needed to get up for various online things to finish 6th grade, but there was a lot less structure. Then summer vacation came and went. The Mix resumed at the start of 7th grade, and while still at home, the school put together a more comprehensive plan of learning, with online classes beginning at 9 a.m. Time to drop some tunes. NOTE: It was a conscious decision to go from four songs to three.

Week of August 24, 2020

This is how I get my NEW 7TH GRADER out of bed!!!

"Eanie Meany (Tower of Love)" - Jim Noir :
"Feels So Good" - Chuck Mangione :
"House Arrest" - SOFI TUKKER & Gorgon City :

Week of August 31, 2020

"I'm Glad, 'cause I'm Finally Returning Home" - Eduard Khil :

"Soy Bomb" - Honest Bob & the Factory-to-Dealer Incentives :

Week of September 14, 2020

This week, the Mix starts with heavy synth, moves into punk, and finishes with Indian music. This may be the most diverse Mix ever. I really hope my daughter appreciates the finely curated collection of tunes I play for her in the morning.

"Less Talk More Rokk" - Freezepop :
"This is LA" - The Briggs :
"Jaan Pahechaan Ho" - Mohammed Rafi :

Week of September 21, 2020

I'm sensing a theme for this week's Mix. As the Brits say, these are all "bangers."

"Bang Bang" - Pete Cannon :
"Bang!" - AJR :
"Bang Bang" - David Sanborn :

Week of September 28, 2020

Yes, I bypassed the obvious choice from the musical to go with what is a better song IMHO.(For those that don't know, the 'obvious' choice was "Good Morning.")

"Tank" - The Seatbelts :
"Singin' in the Rain" - Gene Kelly :
"Blinding Lights" - The Weeknd :

Week of October 5, 2020

Apparently, I felt the need for some pop when curating this week's mix, and definitely went with some iconic queens.

"Stupid Love" - Lady Gaga :
"Express Yourself" - Madonna :
"Crazy in Love" - Beyonce feat. JAY Z :

Week of October 12, 2020

Wer hat gesagt, dass das Oktoberfest abgesagt wurde? Nicht auf meiner Uhr bitches, da ich FÜNF Songs im Mix dieser Woche fallen lasse! (For those not Germanically inclined... Who said Oktoberfest was canceled? Not on my watch bitches as I'm dropping FIVE songs on this week's mix!)

"Fliegerlied (So Einen Schöner Tag)" - Tim Toupet :
"Cordula Grün" - Josh. :
"Atemlos Durch die Nacht" - Helene Fischer :
"Viva Colonia" - Höhner :
"Anton aus Tirol" - DJ Ötzi :

Week of October 19, 2020

A common question I get from posting these weekly Mixes is, "What do YOU wake up to?" I have 6-7 songs that I rotate through and Zoe will get to enjoy three of them this week. (Seriously, if Ethel Merman doesn't get you up... you dead.)

"Dogue Creek" - Bobby Horton :
"A Cruel Angel's Thesis" - Yoko Takahashi :
"Everything's Coming Up Roses" - Ethel Merman :

Week of October 26, 2020

No theme this week. Just whatever I had downloaded and readily available on my phone. Look, not every week can be artfully crafted.

"Bang Your Drum" - Dead Man Fall :
(The original "Bang Your Drum" is strong, but I love the version that was done on the final episode of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson [and is the one I actually have on my phone]
"Beautiful Intentions" - Melanie C :
"I Am The Walrus" - Bono & Secret Machines :

Week of November 2, 2020

It's SofiTukkvember! (not a real thing, but I'm making it one). I've played @sofitukker on the Mix before, but as they are my current "Favorite Band Working," I figured they'd get an exclusive week on the Mix!
Bonus: since the pandemic began, they have streamed a live DJ set EVERY DAY on Insta and Twitch at 10a Pacific/1p Eastern. Check it out if you got a minute.

"Drinkee" - SOFI TUKKER :
"Purple Hat" - SOFI TUKKER :
"Spa" - Icona Pop x SOFI TUKKER :
"Awoo" - SOFI TUKKER featuring Betta Lemme :

Week of November 9, 2020

That's right. Don Freakin' Ho! Also, the original by Corinne Bailey Rae is still the better version, but the cover by Ritt Momney getting airplay nowadays is solid.

"Put Your Records On" - Ritt Momney :
"Living In America" - James Brown :
"Tiny Bubbles" - Don Ho :

Week of November 16, 2020

Every week, a couple of people look up the songs of the Mix. And every so often, some will message me with, "What the hell song was THAT?" Ya, there are one of those this week.

"Fly with Me" - Millennium Parade :
"I Like OJ" - Pikataro :
"We Like to Party" - The Vengaboys :

Week of November 30, 2020

A strong Mix this week as I pull from VASTLY different genres. It's what I do.
Also included a crash course in trademarks, as I had to explain to Zoe how they are known simply as Puffy in Japan, but had to add AmiYumi in the U.S. to prevent confusion with Sean "Puffy" Combs.
It takes a steady hand to make mornings entertaining AND informative up in here!

"Lovely Day" - Bill Withers :
"Galvanize" - The Chemical Brothers featuring Q-Tip :
"Tomodachino Wao!" - Puffy AmiYumi :

Week of December 7, 2020

Let's see: an explicit alternative hit from 2002, an orchestral piece from 1942, and a show-stopping movie showtune from 1982. Man, the Mixes I craft the morning of sure are dicey AF. (I try to plan the Mix the night before. But sometimes, I gotta spin something on the fly as I sit at the foot of Zoe's bed.)

"She Hates Me" - Puddle of Mudd :
"Hoe-Down" (section 5 of "Rodeo") - Aaron Copland :
"Le Jazz Hot" - Julie Andrews :

Week of December 14, 2020

Last school week of 2020 for the Danger Diva, and obviously, had to make it festive. Trust me when I say the Lou Rawls version is THE BEST version of Little Drummer Boy.

"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" - Barenaked Ladies featuring Sarah McLachlan :
"Jingle Bells" - Frank Sinatra :
"The Little Drummer Boy" - Lou Rawls :
"Chanukah Song" - Adam Sandler :
